Dear Friends:

As promised in our last bulletin, the following is our latest update as of January 17, 2018:

Carimar Beach Club on Meads Bay, Anguilla –  4 Months After Hurricane Irma

Carimar Beach Club celebrated its Grand Re-Opening on December 23, 2017, with a big party and great local music! What a difference three and a half months made!

As you probably already know, Carimar Beach Club was very lucky during the passage of Hurricane Irma on September 4, 2017. The property suffered only very limited damage and had power and water throughout the hurricane. We had 2 guests staying with us during the storm (they could not get a flight out in time). And although we were officially closed starting September 4th, in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma, we at Carimar Beach Club were able to host stranded guests from other properties and opened the hotel to relief workers, NGO representatives and the British government and army as a base for their recovery efforts.

The major damage at Carimar were the gardens, the railings going up to the rooms, the warm water solar heaters, beach chairs, some doors and a couple broken windows. The inside of our units did not suffer any damage. Thanks to the hard work of our staff and some additional workers, we were able to clean out the debris on the grounds within days and open one room after the other for more unexpected guests. Carimar has been open the entire time after the hurricane and has had power and fresh water throughout, as our utilities are independent with the use of own generator for power, solar energy panels for hot water, and our own water production (reverse osmosis plant). ANGLEC subsequently restored power to the island before Christmas and our trustworthy work-horse of a generator has been given a rest.

Our outstanding staff received the Anguilla Hotel and Tourism Association award for their unwavering support during the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. Kudos to the Carimar staff for stepping in and doing many jobs that they don’t normally do while in the middle of their own clean-up efforts. Job well done!

Most everything at Carimar is back to normal (see below).  We have planted hundreds and hundreds of new shrubs, trees, and flowers and our gardens are the lushest and most colorful in years. Meads Bay Beach is back and as beautiful as ever (USA Today has voted Meads Bay Beach as one of the best in the Caribbean). We have brand new beach loungers and umbrellas as well. Brand new railings were installed and the buildings have been freshly painted.

Most of our favorite restaurants have reopened including Jacala, Straw Hat, and Ocean Echo on Meads Bay. Blanchards Restaurant and the Beach Shack are scheduled to re-open any day. Their properties were used for island relief efforts. Check our link here for the status of your favorite restaurants and menus. The public and private ferry services are up and running as well as flights into Anguilla. The St. Maarten airport is running smoothly and efficiently using their temporary structures. JetBlue remains the most consistent airline flying non-stops into SXM from JFK with cheap airfares. Check our link here for airline and ferry updates.

One of the remaining challenges is still communications.  Our land phone lines and cable television are still down. However, we are excited to introduce brand new Blu-ray/DVD players in each unit with a library of over 1600 movies and documentaries for complimentary use. There are also some limitations with the Wi-Fi internet in some rooms (it is not stable and we are still trying to get it resolved), but guests can use the internet in the office. There is a comfortable desk for guests to use. The cell phone service is working fine on the island.

WELCOME BACK TO PARADISE!
